Having managed commercial and stud operations, including the largest commercial herd on Brahman Breedplan, our family decided to commence a stud, founded on knowledge learnt. From seedstock to extensive operations, we learnt fertility and longevity in the herd were important traits to build on.
We started our herd with matrons from Kandanga Valley and Belah Valley Studs. These cows had already lived a long productive life, two of which are still alive and contributing today.
Through extensive Embryo Transfer, we have been able to exploit Elite Females, in fact one of the two cows mentioned earlier, Kandanga Valley Roz, has four descending generations below her in our operation and is still actively flushing in her twilight years.
In recent years we have taken to selecting visually appealing youngsters and embarking them on a show career. This has had a two fold effect – a show case of seedstock as well as an insight of how the genetics stand up to production feeding for the commercial markets. Jayne and Denise and to a lesser extent, Myles and Rob have been at the forefront of our studs public exposure which has showcased the strength of our female lines to breed seedstock for clients.
In the past, we hesitated to expand our stud until the advent of the Charbray Society's introduction of its generation plan. It allows us to introduce Brahman and Charolais genetics while maintaining the integrity of the Charbray character, which is stabilising and conforming in type. It also allows us to introduce “gourmet” traits like polledness and coat colour, without losing the “pure” providence other breed societies have encountered.
We prefer to sell bulls on a more personal term with offering bulls for sale at home. Offering paddock raised bulls with inspections of breeders gives buyers a little more confidence in their purchases. Additionally, we have embraced the Charbray Society's introduction of Breedplan as an added selection tool.
Newcombe's Charbrays is a family committed business. Running an Artificial Breeding service ties in with the stud's operation and sees a hands-on approach by Rob and Denise. Jayne is a qualified Event Manager which enhances the stud's promotion. Myles is an avid Horseman, competing in Campdrafts and Saddle Bronc. The family also has a passion for breeding Australian Stockhorses and Border Collie dogs, which are an asset to the management of the operation.
